asiCast 185: Sports, ‘75% Peak TV’ and the way ahead for streaming

A decline of 25% in the content investment of streamers post-pandemic would seem to have settled as a new steady state which Guy Bisson, Executive Director and Co-Founder of Ampere Analysis,  has referred to as ‘75% Peak TV’. Having returned to the UK after three years in LA, Guy talks to our Research Director, Richard Marks, about his experiences there and how it has shaped his perspective on the entertainment industry.

Guy’s time in LA included the unique occurrence of a simultaneous strike of both actors and writers which contributed to massive job losses and cutbacks in Hollywood. The enforced cuts on content spending during this period resulted in improved profitability and cash flow to streaming operations and concentration on sustaining this subsequently.

Richard and Guy discuss the shift towards more affordable content, the importance of the introduction of advertising and the likely development of sports content on streaming services. They also look forward to the trends and major changes underway that will shape the development of the streaming industry in the coming year. Guy stresses the growing importance of what he refers to as ‘diagonal integration’ where companies have to think across ecosystems. As everyone converges on the same streaming space, social media will increasingly butt up against Netflix and broadcasters, and strategic collaborations will increasingly become the norm.

Guy will be speaking at this year’s asi International Television & Video Conference on 5th-7th November in Copenhagen, Denmark.
